LOGLINE
Zhandos, a music teacher, lives in the small town of Balkhash and dreams of moving to a big city. He is loved by his students, and the school turns a blind eye to his side jobs. When a patron nostalgic for his hometown arrives, Zhandos is given a chance to leave, but he must decide what matters more: the art within him, or himself within art.
SYNOPSIS
Zhandos, a young music teacher, dreams of leaving the small town of Balkhash behind for the opportunities of the big city. Yet his attachment to his students, the lake, and the people around him makes it difficult to imagine a life elsewhere.
When a former patron of the arts returns to his hometown, Zhandos is offered a chance to leave and pursue a different future. But as the possibility of departure becomes real, he begins to understand how deeply he is needed in his community.
Through music and the everyday lives of a provincial town, Mugalim explores the tension between personal ambition and responsibility, asking what it means to find one’s place in the world. With a poetic, gently fable-like approach, the film offers an intimate portrait of contemporary Kazakhstan, where the environmental struggles of Lake Balkhash and the decline of small-town life form the backdrop to a story about art, belonging, and the people who give it meaning.
