LOGLINE
After reading a Buddhist myth on a post-apocalyptic island, a young boy is transported into the hidden world of Saekja, a transgender woman whose memories reveal South Korea’s erased queer history.
SYNOPSIS
On a remote island after the apocalypse, a young boy discovers the Buddhist tale of the Yakshini—mythical women condemned as monsters who lure sailors to their deaths. As he reads the story aloud, he is transported into another world: the life of Saekja, a 68-year-old transgender woman whose memories exist beyond the boundaries of myth and official history.
Guided by Saekja, the boy journeys through South Korea’s forgotten queer landscapes, from historic transgender clubs and former red-light districts to the motel room where she underwent gender-affirming surgery decades earlier. Interweaving documentary testimony, theatrical performance, dance, and mythology, EASTER reclaims lives erased from public memory, transforming the Yakshini from a symbol of fear into one of resilience, survival, and liberation.

DIRECTOR
Mokya Shin (b. 1995) is a Seoul-based filmmaker and artist whose work moves fluidly between documentary, fiction, performance, and media art. A former journalist and creative producer at Vice Media APAC, Shin is completing an MFA in Documentary at the Korea National University of Arts (K-ARTS).
His films explore queer identity, marginalized histories, institutional violence, and the ethics of representation through formally adventurous cinematic language. His work has screened internationally at FIDMarseille, Jeonju International Film Festival, DMZ International Documentary Film Festival, and the Seoul International Pride Film Festival.
